Sahara Khatun’s first death anniversary Friday

The first death anniversary of former home minister Advocate Sahara Khatun, who breathed his last at a Bangkok hospital on July 9 in 2020 at the age of 77, will be observed on Friday. Marking the death anniversary, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote will pay homage to Sahara Khatun by placing a floral wreath on her grave at Banani Graveyard.

Besides, Turag Thana Awami League will hold milad mahfils at all local mosques after Jum’a prayers tomorrow. Sahara Khatun, also an Awami League Presidium member, was the sitting lawmaker from Dhaka-18 constituency while she was elected lawmaker from the capital three times with Awami League (AL) ticket. She was made the home minister in 2009 and later served as the post and telecommunication minister.

Born on March 1, 1943, at Kurmitola in the capital Dhaka, Sahara Khatun joined politics since her student life. After her debut in the law profession, she actively joined the Awami League. She served the Mohila Awami League as its city unit’s women affairs secretary and vice-president and central committees’ office secretary and general secretary.

Later, Sahara joined the central Awami League and served the party as assistant law affairs secretary and law affairs secretary. She was a presidium member of the ruling party until her demise. Sahara Khatun was active in different democratic movements, including the 1969 Mass Uprising, anti-Yahya-Ayub movement, liberation struggle and anti-autocratic movement. – BSS.
